HIGH FASHION, haute couture, upscale, aspirational … all these phrases encourage us to think of style as something lofty and difficult to attain. Lanky, gigantic models force us to crane our necks while elevated price tags drain our bank accounts. So I would like to propose a new concept: low fashion. It is modest in cost and demeanor. It involves things that look good with flat or almost-flat shoes (if nature had wanted us to wear heels we’d have stiletto-ready feet, like Barbie). It comes in subtle, close-to-the-ground colors and textures (but uses advanced fabrics that do not require ironing or dry cleaning or even hand-washing). It is smart yet untrendy; thus, it goes on for years. This is not statement dressing; this is stealth dressing. Please nominate your own personal candidates for the First Annual Low Fashion Awards.
