THE FRENCH SAILOR SHIRT is making a return voyage this summer. It’s a classic, of course: stripes, usually navy plus white or ecru; cotton knit; often boatneck (an apt term if ever I heard one). The brand to get is Saint James, which has been turning them out since the mid-nineteenth century. It has an online shop, a few American retail outlets (for either, check saintjames-usa.com), and is now partnering with J. Crew on three styles. About those horizontal stripes: They can make a body look rounder, so unless that’s the effect you’re after (ha), pick darker, low-contrast shades, and/or layer these tees so that just a peek of front or sleeve shows. Warning: They are habit forming. I had to suspend my no-buy policy in order to invest in a new color combo, two shades of gray to match my evolving hair.
